As a Miami fan, I clearly have no strong opinions about the latest CFP rankings release. Everything is as it should be and I have zero hard feelings about it. I am definitely not big mad.
Nah, genuinely, I hoped this wouldn’t happen, but it sure looked like it might. And it did! Three-loss Alabama jumped past two-loss Miami. There’s plenty to argue over (especially for Miami fans, or even South Carolina fans), but the fact is that arguing over whether a two-loss Miami or a three-loss Alabama should be in the playoffs is much better than an argument over whether a one-loss Notre Dame deserves to be in over a two-loss Ohio St or whatever scenario we’d be staring down in a four team playoff format.
The committee absolutely loathes the ACC though.
Picks Recap
We finished the regular season going 23-24 in Week 14 and 336-326 overall. That’s losing money over the run of the season, but what’s funny is that every one of the guys at SLP finished with a winning record, all the way from Sunshine’s 4-3 record to Andy’s 133-131. We aren’t even good for fading! Here’s hoping next year is better.
Consensus Picks
With just nine games this week (all of which are bangers, thanks conference expansion!), we’ve got just a single consensus pick for you: Iowa St +2.
Consensus picks on the season finish at 43-37-1. Good for a couple of units back in your pocket. Hope you stuck to those this year.
If you listen to the podcast, you’ll know that there aren’t any big spreads this week. The largest is 5.5 points and that’s thanks in no small part to expanded conferences and the removal of divisions within some of these conferences. So instead of a week division champ playing a top 5 team in the country, we get top 10 matchups.
It’s yet to be determined how impactful these conference championship games will be on the CFP rankings, but by and large, the playoff field is set. If SMU loses, are they still in? That’s about the only question mark. Everyone else is jockeying for seeding as four playoff byes are on the line.
